LED install: abort! abort!

My LEDs came in Friday, and I managed to find a few minutes to start the install yesterday afternoon.

The tail/brake, rear signal, and backup lights work perfectly, and the brightness and clear colour of the backup lights is a big improvement. I was worried about the lights being too bright, but they’re perfect.

(LEDs on the left, incandescent on the right.)

Then I installed the front signals and blew a fuse... For a minute I thought I may have burned out the flasher relay!

It turns out I bought the wrong bulbs for combined DRL/signal use up front, so I’ve put the originals back in for now. At the same time, the 8-pin flasher module I bought to fix hyperflash doesn’t fit: Canadian vehicles have a 12-pin combined flasher and DRL module. Boo, Toyota!

So the project stops there for now. I’ve ordered the correct bulbs, and have found the necessary instructions for modifying the flasher relay module. I might have have to order new license plate lamp holders or lenses as well, because the screws are so rusted there’s a real risk of breakage...

As far as projects go, this one is par for the course!

I was expecting the abort was due to hyper flashing, and was prepared to give you a fix... I guess I forgot, people here are smarter than your average DIYer.

“It’s got L-E-D tail lights! Now that stands for ‘light emitting dial.’”

I have two options: add load resistors across the lights, or modify a resistor in the flasher module.

Option 1 costs money, and I need to find a safe place to install the loads so that they don’t melt or burn something.

Option 2 is free and easy: just grind down a big solid wire until the resistance is correct. If I screw up, I can just solder in a new piece of wire. I could even stop being cheap and just buy a pot (variable resistor) and solder it in. Then I’ll be able to easily adjust the flash rate.

You can’t return the 8 pin for a proper 12 pin that fits Canadian cars? That would be the right way to do it.

Doesn’t exist as far as I can tell.

Your car appears to be a 4Runner? Is it the V8 per chance?

Yes! Why?

Seems to be the one that the people want. Still the only gen offered with a V8.

Depends on your market. Here in Quebec where gas costs a lot and we pay a surcharge on vehicle registration for motors > 4L, they’re not as popular. This year, the 4.7L motor cost me $109 extra.

But I think it’s great. I drive so little that I couldn’t care less about fuel economy.

Looking good! I’ve been contemplating an LED bulb swap on my DD ‘09 Accent - already did LED reverse lights awhile back and, aside from a faulty LED bulb that (almost literally) burned out, they’ve been working great for months now.

My camera isn’t the greatest, but they are very bright, and the “white” light versus the “yellow” light of the stock bulbs makes it easier to see, IMHO. I picked mine up from DealExtreme for relatively cheap. I also got some for my license plate lights, but annoyingly, on my gen of Accent hatch, you have to access the license plate bulbs from BEHIND by taking all the trim of the tailgate, which is all REALLY on there. I already broke most of the clips on the left-side tailgate trim piece from along the glass, and one or two of the clips on the right-side piece along the glass.....was being careful too. Now there’s a noticeable rattling sound because of it, especially in cold weather...*sigh*

They were surprisingly stylish-looking bulbs too!
